Writer Riheam Junianti has put together a decent enough script
Without ever having heard of this 2023 Indonesian supernatural horror film called “Panggonan Wingit”; (aka "Haunted Hotel"), I sat down to watch it here in 2024, given the opportunity. And given my lifelong love of the horror genre and Asian films, of course, I didn’t need any convincing to sit down and watch this film. It was certainly entertaining, but at the same time, writer Riheam Junianti capitalized on a lot of stereotypical horror tropes that somehow made certain aspects of "Panggonan Wingit" a bit mundane and generic.
I will say, however, that the acting in the movie was good
I’m not saying it’s a bad movie, far from it, because I definitely enjoyed the plot and I’m sure that newcomers to the horror genre will watch this movie. However, as a lifelong horror fan, I found the movie to be good but not impressive. Given the relatively short time I’ve been in Indonesian cinema, I only knew the lead actress Luna Maya in this movie.
I liked the special effects, props, sets and wardrobe in the film
Actor Egy Fedly, who plays the spiritualist Ki Danang, was really well cast in his role, as he gave a quite memorable and convincing performance."Panggonan Wingit" has a fair amount of gore and visual mayhem without being over the top. So director Guntur Soeharjant managed to take something that was used sparingly and make something good out of it. The film was 110 minutes long and could have benefited from a more generous cut in the editing room.
But it’s hardly a film that requires more than a single viewing
It’s worth sitting down and watching if you like horror and Asian genres, of course. My rating for director Guntur Soeharjant’s 2023 film “Panggonan Wingit”; lands at five out of ten stars.
